MINNEAPOLIS – William Wayne Ray Schubel, 33, a four-time felon, has been sentenced to 140 months in federal prison for his role in distributing large amounts of methamphetamine and cocaine. He also faces five years of supervised release following his conviction for illegal possession of numerous firearms.
Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph H. Thompson vowed to continue locking up major dealers like Schubel, calling meth a deadly force eating at Minnesota’s neighborhoods.
Schubel was identified as a high-volume methamphetamine dealer by law enforcement, who saw him in possession of five pounds of the drug packaged for sale. The defendant also discussed receiving fifty pounds more.
On January 10, 2024, search warrants were executed at Schubel’s homes in Oak Grove and Anoka, Minnesota. Inside his Oak Grove home, police found 746 grams of meth, 220 grams of cocaine, 12 firearms, ammunition, and accessories including a loaded Glock with the defendant’s DNA. In his Anoka apartment, they discovered more meth, cleaning supplies, and vacuum seal bags.
Arrested that day in his car, Schubel was found with $2,378 and a cellphone containing drug trafficking evidence. Among the messages: Schubel sending ‘drug menus’ and discussing the consequences of selling controlled substances.
Schubel’s criminal history includes four felony convictions, including domestic assault by strangulation and three for drug distribution and possession. His firearms possession was illegal due to his prior felonies. Sentenced by District Judge John R. Tunheim, this case is a result of an investigation by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and ATF. Assistant U.S. Attorney Raphael B. Coburn prosecuted.
