A 31-year-old woman from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was sentenced to a decade in prison for her role in a 2014 drug robbery that ended in murder. Danielle Busch, 31, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit robbery affecting interstate commerce and using and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence resulting in murder, according to a federal court document. On May 31, 2014, Busch, along with William Leo Yancey and Matthew Robbins, conspired to rob a local drug dealer and carried out the plan, resulting in the murder of the victim.
Busch was sentenced to 120 months and one day imprisonment by Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand. She will also serve a five-year term of supervised release after her prison term. The victim’s death was described by the judge as a ‘horrific offense.’
Yancey, 46, also from Cedar Rapids, received over 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to robbery affecting interstate commerce and using and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence resulting in murder. He will serve 400 months in prison and will begin serving a 188-month sentence for conspiring to manufacture methamphetamine after completing this term.
According to Acting United States Attorney Sean R. Berry, the case highlights the dangers of mixing drugs and guns. ‘The volatile combination of drugs and guns resulted in a man’s tragic death,’ he said. ‘Today’s sentences hold accountable two of the individuals who participated in a plan to rob that man of drugs and money.’
Assistant United States Attorneys Lisa C. Williams and Emily K. Nydle prosecuted the case, which was investigated by multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Marion Police Department and the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation.
The case has been ongoing for several years, with many involved parties awaiting sentencing. Matthew Robbins, who was also involved in the crime, is set to be sentenced at a later date. The case is a stark reminder of the dangers of drug-related crimes and the importance of holding those accountable who engage in such behavior.
Busch and Yancey are currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until they can be transported to a federal prison to begin serving their sentences. The case is a significant victory for law enforcement and a testament to their dedication to keeping communities safe.
