A jury has convicted a 53-year-old woman from Constable, New York, of a massive marijuana conspiracy involving over 1,000 kilograms of the illicit substance.
Stacie Demers, who lived on the Canadian border in Northern New York, was found guilty of working with her family and other co-conspirators to smuggle tens of thousands of kilograms of marijuana from Canada and into the United States.
Demers, who is set to be sentenced on May 19, 2016, faces a minimum of 10 years and up to life in prison, along with a term of post-imprisonment supervised release of at least 5 years and up to life.
The evidence presented in court demonstrated that Demers stored the marijuana in a shed behind her home and in other locations, before it was picked up by drivers and transported to street-level dealers throughout the Eastern United States.
According to prosecutors, the massive operation was a well-organized scheme that involved Demers and her co-conspirators moving over 1,000 kilograms of marijuana across the border.
The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration, New York State Police, and United States Border Patrol, and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Katherine E. Kopita and Cyrus P.W. Rieck.
The conviction is a significant blow to those involved in the marijuana trade, and highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to disrupt and dismantle these types of operations.
