ST. LOUIS – Christopher D. Gruebbel, 37, of St. Louis County, Missouri, is facing a serious return to the federal system after admitting to possessing child pornography and engaging in the predatory practice of “baiting” individuals online. The case, revealed Monday, demonstrates a chilling pattern of recidivism and a blatant disregard for the law, even while under lifetime supervision following a previous conviction.
Gruebbel pleaded guilty to one count of possession of child pornography, a charge that carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison. He could face up to 20 years behind bars, alongside a $250,000 fine. This isn’t his first trip to the federal penitentiary. In 2013, he received a four-year and three-month sentence after pleading guilty to two counts of possessing child pornography. Upon release, he was placed on supervised release for life – a condition he quickly violated.
Court documents reveal a systematic attempt to evade supervision in 2021. Gruebbel’s probation officer repeatedly found he was not at his approved residence, discovering he had been evicted and was living with his mother without authorization. This concealment led to further scrutiny, which uncovered a cache of unauthorized electronic devices: a laptop, a cell phone, an iPad, and an iPod. It was within these devices that the disturbing extent of his activity came to light.
Investigators found that Gruebbel had created fake social media profiles, specifically posing as a young female named “Hannah,” to lure unsuspecting individuals into sending him nude pictures and videos. He actively participated in online chat rooms dedicated to this depraved practice of “baiting.” The digital forensics team recovered a staggering amount of illicit material. The iPad contained 50 images and 14 videos of child pornography, while his other devices held 251 images and 117 videos depicting exploitative and/or suspected child pornography.
The U.S. Probation Office and the FBI spearheaded the investigation, bringing Gruebbel’s scheme to an end. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan Clow is prosecuting the case, seeking to ensure Gruebbel faces the full weight of the law. Sentencing is scheduled for May 16, and federal officials are pushing for a substantial prison term to reflect the severity of his crimes and protect potential victims.
This case is being prosecuted under Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 by the Department of Justice. The project aims to combat the escalating epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse by coordinating federal, state, and local resources to identify, apprehend, and prosecute offenders.
