Salman Subeyr Haji, Armed Carjacking, Washington 2024

Seattle’s criminal underworld has yet another name to fear: Salman Subeyr Haji. The 19-year-old from SeaTac, Washington, is now facing federal charges for an armed carjacking that turned deadly. U.S. Attorney Tessa M. Gorman announced the indictment, which follows a string of violent crimes that left one woman dead.

Haji, who also goes by Salmon Subeyr Haji, Salman Hagi, and Markell Somo Jefferson, is accused of shooting and killing a woman in Tukwila before fleeing abroad. The incident occurred in the parking lot of the Costco on the very day he allegedly stole a Porsche Cayenne at gunpoint from another victim in Seattle.

The federal indictment for armed carjacking will set off an international manhunt, with Haji’s name now listed as a ‘red notice’ target. This notice alerts law enforcement globally to his whereabouts and orders his immediate arrest.

According to police reports, on January 26, 2024, Haji and another suspect followed the woman driving on Queen Anne Hill until they rear-ended her. The pair then forced her to stop, where Haji held a gun to her face, demanded the keys, and stole her car. The victim managed to escape with her life, but not before witnessing the horror.

Carjacking is a severe offense in Washington, with penalties ranging from up to 15 years in prison. Using a firearm during the crime of violence can lead to life imprisonment, with a mandatory minimum of seven additional years served consecutively. The charges against Haji are serious and could land him behind bars for decades.

This case was jointly investigated by the Seattle Police Department, Tukwila Police Department, King County Sheriff’s Office, and the FBI. Assistant United States Attorney Brian Wynne is handling the prosecution, working closely with the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office to bring justice to the victims of this senseless violence.
