Zaid Mendoza, Drug & Firearms Trafficking, Jamestown NY, 2023

JAMESTOWN, NY – Zaid Mendoza, a 45-year-old Jamestown resident known on the streets as “Diamond,” is facing a potential life sentence after a federal grand jury indicted him on multiple drug and firearms charges. Mendoza is accused of flooding the Jamestown area with fentanyl and methamphetamine while simultaneously possessing an illegal firearm.

The indictment, unsealed Wednesday, details how investigators believe Mendoza was actively dealing narcotics throughout October and December of 2022. The bust culminated in a December 7th raid on Mendoza’s residence where authorities seized $1,800 in cash, roughly 36 grams of fentanyl, an undisclosed quantity of methamphetamine, a 9mm semi-automatic pistol, drug packaging materials, and multiple cell phones. Adding insult to injury, investigators found another 36 grams of fentanyl on Mendoza’s person at the time of his arrest.

Federal prosecutors are hammering Mendoza with five counts: possession with intent to distribute fentanyl, possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking crimes, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. The charges carry a mandatory minimum penalty of five years in prison, with a maximum sentence stretching to life behind bars, and a potential $1,000,000 fine. This isn’t Mendoza’s first brush with the law; court records show he was previously convicted of a felony in Chautauqua County Court in 2014, making firearm possession illegal for him.

The case is part of a larger Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) operation – a federal initiative designed to dismantle major criminal organizations. A multi-agency task force, including the Jamestown Police Department Metro Drug Task Force, the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office County Drug Task Force, the FBI, Homeland Security Investigations, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), collaborated on the investigation. ATF Special Agent-in-Charge John B. DeVito oversaw the bureau’s involvement.

Mendoza was arraigned before U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael J. Roemer and is currently being held without bail. Assistant U.S. Attorney Joshua A. Violanti is prosecuting the case. Authorities are confident they can prove Mendoza’s guilt, but as always, the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

This investigation underscores the continued flow of deadly narcotics into Western New York and the lengths to which law enforcement are going to stem the tide. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on any developments as they occur. The streets of Jamestown, already struggling with addiction and violence, will be watching closely.
