A Webster County man is heading to federal prison for his role in a methamphetamine conspiracy. Kevin Eugene Peterson, 45, from Duncombe, Iowa, was sentenced to more than 16 years in federal prison for conspiring to manufacture and distribute methamphetamine.
Peterson pleaded guilty to the charge on December 12, 2012, and admitted to conspiring with others to manufacture and distribute at least 150 grams of actual (pure) methamphetamine from January 2010 through August 2012. He also admitted to manufacturing methamphetamine on January 22, 2012, and distributing it to an individual cooperating with law enforcement on April 23, 2012.
Peterson has at least six prior felony drug convictions, which likely contributed to the lengthy sentence. He was sentenced by United States District Court Judge Mark W. Bennett in Sioux City to 198 months’ imprisonment, as well as a $100 special assessment. Peterson will also serve a 10-year term of supervised release after his prison term.
The case was investigated by the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, Webster City Police Department, Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Shawn S. Wehde prosecuted the case.
Peterson is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison. The sentence is a significant one, and it highlights the seriousness with which law enforcement and the courts are treating methamphetamine-related crimes in Iowa.
The case file number is 12-3039, and court file information is available at https://ecf.iand.uscourts.gov/cgi-bin/login.pl. The sentence is a reminder that those who engage in methamphetamine trafficking will face severe consequences, including lengthy prison sentences and significant fines.
The investigation and prosecution of Peterson’s case are a testament to the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies in Iowa to combat methamphetamine trafficking. The use of cooperating individuals and thorough investigations helped to build a strong case against Peterson, ultimately leading to his conviction and sentence.
