A brazen attempt to transport nearly 250 pounds of marijuana concealed in welder units has landed a California man in federal prison. David Wayne Holleman, age 54, from Valley Village, California, was sentenced to five years in federal prison for his role in the crime.
Holleman pleaded guilty to possessing with intent to distribute 100 kilograms or more of marijuana on September 25, 2012. The guilty plea ultimately led to his sentencing, which was handed down by United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade in Cedar Rapids.
The sentence imposed on Holleman was 60 months’ imprisonment, in addition to a special assessment of $100. Following his prison term, Holleman will be required to serve a four-year term of supervised release. As is standard in the federal system, there is no possibility of parole.
The investigation and prosecution of Holleman’s case involved a collaborative effort between multiple law enforcement agencies. The Iowa State Patrol, Iowa County Sheriff’s Department, and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Task Force all played a role in bringing Holleman to justice. The DEA Task Force consists of the DEA, the Linn County Sheriff’s Office, the Cedar Rapids Police Department, the Marion Police Department, the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, and the Sixth Judicial District Department of Correctional Services.
Assistant United States Attorney Dan Chatham prosecuted the case, which was filed under case number CR12-0040-1-LRR. Court file information is available to the public at https://ecf.iand.uscourts.gov/cgi-bin/login.pl. Holleman is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody, pending his transportation to a federal prison to begin serving his sentence.
The sentencing of David Holleman serves as a reminder of the serious consequences that await those who engage in large-scale marijuana trafficking. With the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies and the federal court system, individuals who attempt to profit from the illicit drug trade can expect to face significant prison time and other penalties.
In this case, the use of welder units to conceal the marijuana was a clever attempt to evade detection, but ultimately proved unsuccessful. The determination and cooperation of the law enforcement agencies involved were instrumental in disrupting this trafficking operation and bringing the perpetrator to justice. As the war on drugs continues, it is clear that federal authorities will not tolerate such blatant attempts to circumvent the law and will pursue those responsible with vigor.
