SHREVEPORT, La. – A Shreveport man has admitted to receiving child pornography, facing potentially decades behind bars for his actions.
James Vail, 52, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge S. Maurice Hicks Jr. to one count of receipt of child pornography. Authorities allege Vail accessed and downloaded numerous images of child porn on his computer between October 3, 2015, and June 4, 2016.
The case against Vail was part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative by the U.S. Department of Justice to combat the rise in online sexual exploitation of children. The investigation into Vail was conducted by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Louisiana State Police.
Should he be sentenced as charged, Vail could spend five to 20 years in prison, face a life sentence on supervised release, register as a sex offender for life, lose seized property, and pay a fine of $250,000. His sentencing is scheduled for July 27, 2017.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Earl M. Campbell is handling the prosecution of this case. The public is encouraged to report suspected child predators through the Department of Homeland Security’s toll-free hotline at (866) 347-2423 or online via www.ice.gov/predator/smartphone-app.
