ORLANDO, FL – In a grim reminder of the dangers posed by repeat felons with easy access to firearms, Tyriq Quentel Coger, 26, from Melbourne, has been indicted for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Coger faces up to 15 years in federal prison if convicted. The United States Attorney’s Office announced the charges, which also include the forfeiture of the firearm and ammunition used in the offense.
The allegations stem from an August 27 traffic stop, where officers observed Coger switching seats with a passenger during a routine check for driving without lights. A probable cause search revealed a loaded Glock pistol equipped with a machinegun conversion device, along with a firearm belonging to the backseat passenger.
Coger’s rap sheet includes multiple felony convictions: aggravated battery, possession of a firearm by a delinquent, battery by person in prison or jail facility, and fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer. Federal law bans him from possessing firearms or ammunition.
Assistant United States Attorney Megan Testerman is prosecuting the case, which is part of Operation Take Back America, a DOJ initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration, eliminating cartels, transnational criminal organizations, and protecting communities from violent crime.
The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Rockledge Police Department. Coger is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
