Jerry Smith, VA Disability Benefits Fraud, Florida 2021

⏱ 2 min read

A 73-year-old New Smyrna Beach man swindled $245k by posing as a blind veteran, claiming he was too disabled to work or drive. Jerry Smith lied to the VA about his vision, saying he was legally blind.

But investigators say Smith’s eyesight was actually fine. He could drive, read, work as a firearms specialist, and navigate around people and obstacles in stores.

Between 2017 and 2021, Smith received $244,953.70 in stolen VA disability compensation and benefits.

Smith’s scheme was uncovered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs – Office of Inspector General.

He faces up to 10 years in federal prison. A sentencing date has not yet been set.
