Gun Crime on the Rise: Couple Faces Prison for Illegal Firearm Possession
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – In a shocking turn of events, a Charleston husband and wife duo has been sentenced to federal prison for illegal firearm possession. Carl Taylor, 64, and Patsy Taylor, 52, were handed down sentences on January 4, 2013, following a lengthy investigation by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the Metropolitan Drug Enforcement Network Team.
The investigation revealed that the Taylors had jointly possessed a loaded .40 caliber Smith & Wesson handgun during a time when they admitted to being habitual users of oxycodone. The couple had received multiple packages of oxycodone pills, including a package of 100 pills on January 4, 2013, and a package of 90 pills just weeks earlier.
Assistant United States Attorney Haley Bunn was responsible for the prosecution of the case, which was brought under Project Safe Neighborhoods – a nationwide commitment to reduce gun crime in the United States by networking existing local programs targeting gun crime.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia has made it clear that it will aggressively pursue and shut down illegal pill trafficking, eliminating open air drug markets, and curtailing the spread of opiate painkillers and heroin in communities across the Southern District.
