Local Man Charged with Failure to Appear
A federal grand jury in South Dakota has indicted an Eagle Butte man on charges of Failure to Appear. Cheyene Michael Thompson, age 30, was indicted on July 16, 2020.
According to the indictment, Thompson failed to appear for his sentencing hearing for violating the terms and conditions of his supervised release on January 13, 2020. He appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on February 16, 2022, and pled not guilty to the Indictment.
The maximum penalty upon conviction is up to 10 years in custody and/or a $250,000 fine, three years of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.
The investigation is being conducted by the U.S. Marshal Service. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Miller is prosecuting the case.
Thompson was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial. A trial date has not been set.
The charge is merely an accusation and Thompson is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
Thompson’s case has sparked concern in the community, highlighting the importance of adhering to court orders and the consequences of failure to do so.
