A 55-year-old Cedar Park man, Scott Joseph Kopas, has been found guilty of producing and possessing child pornography after a federal investigation and trial. The FBI launched an investigation into Kopas’s online activities, which led to the execution of search warrants at his Cedar Park residence and a hotel in Hawaii. The searches uncovered evidence of Kopas’s crimes, including hidden cameras in bathrooms and a bedroom, which he used to produce child sexual abuse material (CSAM) depicting two minor females.
The investigation revealed that Kopas had produced CSAM by editing the faces of the minor females onto images of nude adults and children. He also possessed hundreds of thousands of images and videos of CSAM. Additionally, evidence showed that Kopas had purchased child sex dolls from a Chinese company, which were found in his bedroom closet.
Kopas’s crimes were not limited to the production and possession of CSAM. A few years prior to the search of his residence, a hidden camera was found in a minor female’s bedroom, which Kopas had admitted to installing in an unrelated civil deposition. The cumulative evidence led to Kopas’s conviction on three counts of production of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography.
The conviction is a result of a collaborative effort between the FBI in Texas and Hawaii, as well as the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Honolulu. U.S. Attorney Justin R. Simmons emphasized the seriousness with which his office takes cases involving children and expressed appreciation for the teamwork and resources that went into the investigation and trial.
