Iowa Felon Sentenced to 7 Years for Gun Possession

A convicted felon who possessed multiple firearms has been sentenced to seven years in federal prison, according to a recent conviction in Iowa.

Choroin Devontea Smith, 24, of Waterloo, Iowa, received the prison term after an August 27, 2020 guilty plea to being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition.

Smith admitted to possessing handguns and an assault rifle during a traffic stop in Waterloo on January 26, 2020. Police officers observed a gun holster in the front of the car and a semi-automatic rifle in the backseat.

Smith was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Judge C.J. Williams. He must also serve a three-year term of supervised release after the prison term.

The case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime in communities. PSN is an evidence-based program that focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with prevention and reentry programs.

Smith is being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Lisa C. Williams and was investigated by a Federal Task Force composed of the Waterloo Police Department, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.

Smith was sentenced to 84 months’ imprisonment. He will also serve a three-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.
