COVINGTON, Ky. – A gritty Cincinnati traffic stop turned into a federal case against 30-year-old Deshawn Parker this week. The Covington native was sentenced to 24 months in prison by Chief U.S. District Judge David Bunning for possession of a machinegun.
Parker’s trouble started on September 21, 2024, when he refused to exit his vehicle during a routine stop. The odor of marijuana led officers to search the car, uncovering not only small amounts of pot but also spent shell casings and a loaded pistol equipped with a machinegun conversion device, known as an MCD or ‘Glock switch’.
Under federal law, Parker will serve 85 percent of his sentence behind bars. His release will be followed by three years of supervision under the U.S. Probation Office.
The Acting United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky, Paul McCaffrey, and local law enforcement officials, including Special Agent in Charge John Nokes of ATF and Covington Police Chief Brian Valenti, jointly announced Parker’s conviction. The ATF and Covington Police Department led the investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Tony Bracke representing the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a national initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. Launched in May 2021, PSN focuses on fostering community trust, supporting local prevention efforts, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring outcomes to ensure safer neighborhoods for all.
