In a major blow to drug trafficking in the Midwest, an illegal alien couple from Mexico was caught with over two kilograms of cocaine and a loaded handgun in their car during a traffic stop in Columbus, Ohio in June 2025. Laura Reyes Esquivel, 49, and Mario Gamino Sanchez, 30, were the sole occupants of the vehicle and planned to distribute the cocaine in the Columbus area for personal profit. The couple’s scheme was foiled when law enforcement conducted the traffic stop, leading to their arrest and subsequent sentencing. Reyes Esquivel and Sanchez pleaded guilty to the charges, with Sanchez pleading guilty in December 2025 and Reyes Esquivel in April 2026.
The couple’s sentencing was the result of a joint effort by law enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Detroit. The case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration, cartels, and transnational criminal organizations.
Reyes Esquivel was sentenced by Chief U.S. District Judge Sarah D. Morrison, while Sanchez was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Michael H. Watson. Both defendants received a 10-year prison sentence for their crimes. The sentencing was announced by Dominick S. Gerace II, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio, and Jared Murphey, Acting Special Agent in Charge, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Detroit.
