Colchester Felon Sentenced for Illegal Firearm Possession

Dennis Martin, 42, of Colchester, Vermont, faced the music on February 9, 2023, when a jury convicted him of possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. The case, which unfolded in United States District Court in Burlington, had been a four-day spectacle of evidence and testimony.

Starting with domestic abuse allegations from Martin’s wife in February 2019, the story took a dark turn when his mother-in-law received a Snapchat video featuring Martin brandishing a Ruger .380 caliber pistol. Martin was swiftly arrested on felony domestic assault and disorderly conduct charges.

The Ruger LCP pistol found its way into the hands of law enforcement during this initial encounter, setting the stage for Martin’s subsequent conviction in Vermont Superior Court. However, it wasn’t until June 2021 that federal charges came into play when Martin was accused of brandishing another firearm in Burlington’s Franklin Square.

Despite turning himself in to police, Martin faced a federal criminal complaint and an eventual detention order. The jury’s guilty verdict on February 9, 2023, confirmed what law enforcement had long suspected: Martin had knowingly possessed the Ruger LCP while aware of his prior felony conviction.

The United States Attorney for the District of Vermont, Nikolas P. Kerest, praised the efforts of the ATF and local police in bringing Martin to justice. Kerest emphasized the U.S. Attorney’s Office commitment to prioritizing cases involving felons who possess firearms and commit domestic abuse.

Martin, now facing a stiff penalty of up to 10 years’ imprisonment, a term of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine, awaits sentencing. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jonathan A. Ophardt, Corinne M. Smith, and Wendy L. Fuller prosecuted the case, while Michelle Anderson Barth, Esq., represented Martin.

This conviction is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a multi-level law enforcement initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities. For more information on PSN, visit here.
