Counterfeit Sports Gear Scandal Rocks Bay State
A 51-year-old Chicopee store owner has been charged with selling counterfeit sports apparel.
According to federal authorities, James M. Dent trafficked in counterfeit goods between 2007 and 2012, selling fake jerseys from the NHL, NFL, MLB, and NBA in several stores across Central and Western Massachusetts.
The fake gear was sold at five locations: the Holyoke Mall in Holyoke, the Greendale Mall in Worcester, the Berkshire Mall in Lanesborough, the Hampshire Mall in Hadley, and the Eastfield Mall in Springfield.
Dent’s stores, which bore names like Sports Zone and Collectibles and Cards, allegedly peddled the counterfeit goods to unsuspecting sports fans.
The crime carries a significant penalty: up to 10 years in prison, followed by three years of supervised release and a $250,000 fine.
United States Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz and Bruce M. Foucart, Special Agent in Charge of Homeland Security Investigations in Boston, made the announcement today.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Amy Harman Burkart of Ortiz’s Cybercrime Unit.
While the charges remain allegations, the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
