Custodian’s Secret: Mennemeier Gets 63 Months for Child Porn
ST. LOUIS – Bernard Ray Mennemeier, 58, of O’Fallon, Missouri, will spend the next five years and three months in federal prison after admitting to a sickening habit: collecting and sharing child sexual abuse material. U.S. District Judge John A. Ross handed down the 63-month sentence Wednesday, followed by a lifetime of supervised release. The case lays bare a disturbing reality – predators can hide in plain sight, even within the walls of our schools.
The investigation began when the FBI flagged five videos of child sexual abuse material uploaded to a Dropbox account. A court-approved search of that account quickly led investigators to Mennemeier’s home, where they discovered a cache of both child pornography and child erotica. It wasn’t just passive possession; Mennemeier actively sought out this material, admitting in his plea agreement to “numerous” transactions with a Twitter user who sold him the depraved content.
“This case was especially concerning given that Bernard Mennemeier was working in a high school at the time he possessed child sexual abuse material,” stated Special Agent in Charge Chris Crocker of the FBI St. Louis Division. The proximity to vulnerable students undoubtedly heightened the gravity of the crime, and will now permanently bar Mennemeier from working around children. He will be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
Mennemeier pleaded guilty in April to one count of possession of child pornography. While the charge itself is straightforward, the underlying depravity is anything but. The FBI’s investigation, a critical component of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Childhood initiative, underscores the ongoing fight against online child exploitation. This isn’t a new problem, but the digital age has provided predators with new avenues to conceal their crimes.
Project Safe Childhood, launched in 2006, aims to marshal federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute those who exploit children online, and to rescue the victims.
