Child Predator Sentenced to 8 Years Behind Bars
In a shocking case of exploitation, Daniel Peggs, a 34-year-old former school superintendent, has been sentenced to 96 months in federal prison for possessing child pornography.
The sentencing took place on Friday, October 25, 2023 in the Western District of Wisconsin.
Peggs was convicted of possessing child pornography, a charge stemming from an investigation by the Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations, and Ashland County Sheriff’s Office.
The case began to unravel in January 2019 when a 20-year-old woman came forward, alleging that she was a victim of sexual exploitation by several men when she was 17 years old.
According to the investigation, Peggs, using the alias Jake Thompson, responded to an ad on Craigslist.com and recruited other adult men for a group sex encounter with the minor at a hotel in Rice Lake, Wisconsin.
The court found that Peggs was systematically dishonest and his claim that he didn’t know the victim was a minor was not credible. The judge also noted that mistake of age is not a defense for the production of child pornography.
Peggs will serve his sentence followed by 10 years of supervised release.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Western District of Wisconsin thanks the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Western District of North Carolina for their cooperation and coordination. The case is a stark reminder of the dangers of child exploitation and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable.
The charge against Peggs was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Julie Pfluger.
The case highlights the importance of vigilance in protecting our children from predators like Peggs.
Peggs’ actions are a betrayal of the trust placed in him as a school superintendent and a reminder that those in positions of power can still engage in heinous crimes.
