GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has joined forces with the Federation of State Medical Boards to launch a crucial training initiative aimed at curbing the prescription drug abuse epidemic sweeping across Michigan.
Drug overdoses have become the leading cause of injury-related deaths in the U.S., and every day, the devastating impact of prescription drug misuse on local communities is palpable. This crisis has torn apart neighborhoods throughout the nation, necessitating immediate action.
The ‘Michigan Practitioner Diversion Awareness Training’ is an exclusive event designed for DEA-registered physicians, dentists, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners. The training seeks to equip participants with vital information and tools to tackle prescription drug abuse and addiction head-on.
Key topics on the agenda include the DEA’s Diversion Control mission, the Michigan Automated Prescription System, state legislative updates on healthcare fraud and diversion, electronic prescribing, and a comprehensive overview of the physiology of addiction. A significant response is anticipated from the nearly 53,000 DEA-registered practitioners in Michigan.
Scheduled for Friday, June 14, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., the training will be held at Grand Valley State University’s Loosemore Auditorium (401 Fulton Street W., Grand Rapids, MI 49504). Check-in opens at 7:30 a.m., and a live stream of the event is accessible to DEA-registered practitioners. However, registration for this event has been closed.
Media representatives are invited to attend a pre-event briefing between 7:00 a.m. and 8:15 a.m. Kathy Federico, Diversion Program Manager for the DEA’s Detroit Field Division, will be present for comments after the opening remarks.
