ST. LOUIS – In a dramatic turn of events in the criminal underworld of St. Louis County, Deonte Alfred, 26, from Berkeley, Missouri, was sentenced to 102 months in federal prison on Tuesday after being caught with a stolen firearm and vehicle.
The case took an intense twist when U.S. District Judge Stephen R. Clark presided over the sentencing, noting that Alfred’s actions endangered countless lives. Alfred had pleaded guilty in August to the charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm, which came after his audacious attempt to flee law enforcement on January 6, 2021.
Pursued by St. Louis County Police, Alfred drove away in a stolen vehicle known for its use in selling stolen cars. The chase became increasingly dangerous when Alfred jumped out of the driver’s seat while the car was still moving, a reckless act that could have resulted in tragedy.
His escape didn’t last long as he discarded his weapon—a loaded .40-caliber Glock handgun with an extended magazine—before taking to the woods. The determined pursuit led to Alfred climbing several fences, eventually losing his footing on the bank of a nearby creek, where officers finally apprehended him.
After his capture, Alfred confessed to police that he was selling stolen vehicles and fully aware that the car in which he was caught was indeed stolen. His plea agreement indicates a willingness to take responsibility for his actions, but it hasn’t erased the gravity of his crime or the sentence imposed by the court.
The investigation into this case was thorough, with the St. Louis County Police Department leading the charge. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Dunkel was instrumental in bringing Alfred to justice, ensuring that he faces the full weight of the law for his brazen actions.
