Corrupt Cop Gets 18 Months for $15,000 Bribe
DETROIT – Former Detroit Police Department Officer Michael Mosley, a 19-year veteran, was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for accepting a $15,000 bribe from a drug trafficker, Acting United States Attorney Saima Mohsin announced.
Mosley, 49, pleaded guilty in February 2020 to bribery charges. His sentencing was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to court documents, Mosley was a member of the Police Department’s Major Violators Unit in April 2019 when he searched a drug trafficker’s house and uncovered 2 kilograms of heroin, 1 kilogram of cocaine, and 6 firearms. The trafficker admitted to owning the drugs and signed a confession, which Mosley then returned in exchange for the bribe.
The investigation revealed that Mosley accepted $10,000 in cash on May 2, 2019, and another $5,000 on May 23, 2019, from the drug trafficker in exchange for not pursuing charges.
Acting U.S. Attorney Saima Mohsin commended the FBI for conducting the investigation and praised the bravery of the officers who brought Mosley to justice. ‘The vast majority of Detroit Police Officers are dedicated and superb public servants,’ Mohsin said. ‘When Mosley accepted a bribe, he betrayed his oath as a police officer and the citizens of Detroit.’
FBI Special Agent in Charge Timothy Waters added, ‘Michael Mosley violated his oath to serve and protect the people of Detroit. His misconduct was a betrayal of his fellow officers, and it is not representative of the outstanding work of the Detroit Police Department every day.’
The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Sarah Resnick Cohen, David A. Gardey, and Adriana Dydell.
