Joseph Lafferty, Threatening a Federal Official, South Dakota 2025

⏱ 2 min read

A 68-year-old Eagle Butte man made good on his bad intentions, but not in the way he hoped. On July 21, 2025, Joseph Lafferty threatened to kill a federal official employed by Indian Health Service in Eagle Butte, within the Cheyenne River Sioux Indian Reservation.

Lafferty’s outburst didn’t go unnoticed. He was indicted in August 2025 and went to trial in January 2026. A jury found him guilty of Threatening a Federal Official.

Now, Lafferty is facing four years of probation and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. The punishment may not be severe, but it’s a reminder that threatening a federal official is no laughing matter.

The case was investigated by the FBI and Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Wayne Venhuizen prosecuted the case.
