RICHMOND, Va. – The grim saga of illegal reentry into the United States has reached another chapter as Mario A. Macias-Maldonado, 29, a native of El Salvador, pleaded guilty to the heinous crime of illegal reentry following his deportation and a prior conviction for an aggravated felony.
Macias-Maldonado’s criminal history is a sordid tale of repeat offenses. In August 2009, he was convicted of multiple felonies including forgery, driving while intoxicated, grand larceny, obstructing justice, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and operating without a license. He was summarily removed from the United States in January 2010 but managed to cross back over the border again.
In July 2016, Chesterfield County police issued a felony warrant for Macias-Maldonado on charges of rape by force, threat, or intimidation. His capture followed in August 2016, and he was convicted in February 2017 in Chesterfield County Circuit Court of sexual battery, receiving a one-year sentence.
The Justice Department’s Eastern District of Virginia division is now set to mete out justice once more. Macias-Maldonado faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison when sentenced on July 13th, although federal sentences are typically less severe. Assistant U.S. Attorney S. David Schiller will be handling the prosecution.
The case was investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and U.S. Attorney Dana J. Boente announced the guilty plea after U.S. Magistrate Judge David J. Novak accepted it.
