Ex-Con Avery Nash Sentenced to 2 Years for Gun Possession

Avery Varkese Nash, 38, of Jackson, Alabama, has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for possessing a stolen firearm. Nash, a convicted burglar, was caught with a pistol and loaded magazine in the trunk of a vehicle during a traffic stop in Thomasville, Alabama, on October 24, 2017.

Nash, who had previously been convicted of burglary in 2014, was a passenger in the vehicle when police stopped it for not having the required license plate. Neither Nash nor the driver could produce identification, and the driver allowed police to search the trunk. Nash informed police that he had a pistol and a loaded magazine in the trunk, which were subsequently recovered by police and determined to be a stolen firearm.

Nash pleaded guilty to the offense of felon in possession of a firearm on April 12, 2018. The Thomasville Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Mobile Field office investigated the case, with Assistant United States Attorney Christopher Baugh prosecuting the case for the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Alabama.

Senior Judge William H. Steele sentenced Nash to a term of 24 months in federal prison on August 2, 2018. Nash’s sentence is a reminder of the consequences of firearms possession for convicted felons, and the importance of cooperation with law enforcement during traffic stops.
