Former convict Billy Wayne Williams, 47, pulled his gun and shot a Webbers Falls police officer in the face during a routine traffic stop on March 16, 2025. The officer was rushed to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Williams abandoned his vehicle and led authorities on a statewide manhunt.
A Blue Alert was issued for Williams, warning he was armed and extremely dangerous. Grants, New Mexico police picked up his license plate on a traffic camera and apprehended him at an area Walmart the next morning.
Williams was subsequently charged with multiple counts related to the shooting, including Assault with Intent to Commit Murder, Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, and Use, Carry, Brandish, and Discharge of a Firearm During a Crime of Violence.
Under the terms of his plea, Williams faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. He will be sentenced on a later date.
