Wyatt Op Maloney, Voluntary Manslaughter, Arizona 2023

⏱ 2 min read

A brutal beating in the middle of the day in Tuba City, Arizona, ended in a young man’s death, and now the killer’s getting 12 years behind bars.

Wyatt Op Maloney, 24, of Tuba City, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter for the July 14, 2023, assault on an enrolled Navajo Nation member. The victim, also 24, died after suffering fatal blunt force trauma injuries from a beating that included multiple strikes to the head and face.

The assault took place on the Navajo Nation, and the FBI Phoenix office in Flagstaff, along with the Navajo Nation Police Department, led the investigation.

Prosecutor Christina J. Reid-Moore, an assistant U.S. attorney, handled the case, and U.S. District Judge Douglas L. Rayes handed down the sentence – 144 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release.

Maloney’s history, or lack thereof, doesn’t excuse his actions, but it’s worth noting he’s an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation like the victim.
