St. Louis Alderman Brandon Bosley thought he’d hit the jackpot after his car was smashed in a parking lot hit-and-run. Except the damage wasn’t worth the price he tried to inflate, and his scheme unraveled when the insurance company got suspicious.
Bosley’s 2010 Toyota Prius was parked in a St. Louis lot when it was hit by another vehicle in September 2021. But when he tried to collect, Bosley concocted a scam to bilk the insurance company out of thousands of dollars. He convinced a local repair shop owner to inflate the repair estimate, saying ‘mark that (expletive) all the way up,’ and even discussed buying the car back if it was totaled.
After the insurance company baulked at the $6,800 repair estimate, Bosley had a second estimate submitted for $4,333. The insurance company ultimately totaled the car and paid Bosley $7,978.90, while he had just $14.93 in his bank account. He lived off the insurance proceeds for about six weeks.
Bosley was found guilty by a jury in January of three felony wire fraud charges and one count of making a false statement to the FBI. On Tuesday, he was sentenced to 16 months in prison, plus three years of supervised release, and ordered to pay $6,253.90 in restitution.
