Kansas City, MO – A Mexican national is facing federal time after getting behind the wheel drunk in Grandview, Missouri. Jaime Cruz-Hernandez, 37, was pulled over by police on January 6, 2026, for driving while intoxicated. That’s when they discovered he was in the country illegally.
Cruz-Hernandez had been deported to Mexico in 2019, but somehow managed to sneak back in. Now he’s facing up to two years in federal prison without parole.
Prosecutors say Cruz-Hernandez’s case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide effort to combat illegal immigration and cartels. U.S. Attorney’s Office for Western Missouri Assistant U.S. Attorney Rudolph R. Rhodes IV and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Viet Le brought the case against Cruz-Hernandez.
After a 90-minute deliberation, a jury in U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Missouri, returned a guilty verdict against Cruz-Hernandez.
