A 70-year-old Hancock County man, Robert J. Niederbrack, has been sentenced to prison for stockpiling homemade explosives and possessing over 30 firearms in Findlay, Ohio. Niederbrack pleaded guilty to the charges, which include being a felon in possession of firearms, possession of unregistered firearm silencers, and possession of explosives. The sentencing took place on May 5, after federal agents seized a massive arsenal of weapons and explosive materials from his storage unit in Ottawa, Ohio.

According to court documents, Niederbrack’s storage unit was found to contain 33 firearms, including rifles, pistols, and shotguns, as well as firearm silencers and ammunition. Agents also discovered sealed tubes filled with explosive powder, fitted with fuses, and approximately 25 pounds of explosive powders, including aluminum and sulfur. Additionally, materials related to warfare devices and techniques were recovered.

Niederbrack’s prior convictions in 2009 included possession of firearms and ammunition by a felon, as well as drug-related offenses. The case was investigated by the Department of Homeland Security, and the prosecution was led by Assistant United States Attorney Dexter L. Philips for the Northern District of Ohio.

Niederbrack was also ordered to forfeit 16 rifles, 11 pistols, and 6 shotguns. The sentencing brings an end to a disturbing case of a convicted felon stockpiling deadly explosives and firearms in a residential area.
