John Ward, a 46-year-old felon from Maple Heights, Ohio, was caught with a loaded 9mm pistol in August 2025, while he was out on parole for a similar offense. Ward, who had previous convictions for being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition in 2022, and for aggravated robbery in 2010, was highly intoxicated when law enforcement found the gun near a vehicle in Cleveland. The incident occurred during a liquor law compliance inspection at a bar, where Ward was seen moving away from a group of people towards a vehicle, before dropping the gun. He was taken into custody and later pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.
The investigation, conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), revealed that Ward had a history of violent crime and firearm violations. His previous convictions and parole status made his possession of a firearm a serious offense, putting the community at risk. The prosecution, led by Assistant United States Attorneys Stephanie A. Wojtasik and Scott C. Zarzycki, resulted in a sentence of 129 months (10.75 years) in prison, followed by three years of supervised release.
The sentence reflects the seriousness of the offense and the need to protect the community from individuals who pose a risk to public safety. The case highlights the importance of enforcing firearm laws and holding individuals accountable for their actions, particularly those with a history of violent crime and firearm violations.
