BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – In a gritty setback for the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) McDowell, Demetrius McKinney, 45, has been handed a one-year and one-month prison sentence, to follow by three years of supervised release, for possession of a weapon while incarcerated.
The court documents revealed that on April 24, 2024, McKinney was embroiled in an altercation at FCI McDowell. An FCI staff member, acting on suspicion, conducted a search and discovered a handcrafted weapon, commonly referred to as a ‘shank,’ tucked away in McKinney’s right front pants pocket.
The shank, a six-and-a-half-inch piece of metal with one end sharpened and a cloth handle attached, posed a clear threat within the prison walls. McKinney’s sentence will be served consecutively to the term he is currently serving.
Lisa G. Johnston, Acting United States Attorney, announced the sentence, commending the Federal Bureau of Prisons for their diligent investigative work in this case. Senior United States District Judge David A. Faber imposed the sentence, while Assistant United States Attorneys Brian D. Parsons and Timothy D. Boggess prosecuted the matter.
