On December 7, 2025, Alvaro Salinas Jr., a 45-year-old Edinburg resident, was found asleep behind the wheel of a Nissan Rogue in the middle of the road. As law enforcement attempted to wake him, Salinas became combative, tried to flee, and attempted to bite the officers. A search of his vehicle revealed a firearm and approximately 127 grams of meth.
Salinas, a repeat felon with prior convictions for federal drug trafficking, transporting of illegal aliens, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, pleaded guilty on April 27. His criminal history and inability to live a law-abiding life were noted by the court during sentencing.
Chief U.S. District Judge Randy Crane sentenced Salinas to 140 months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release. The investigation was conducted by the DEA and ATF, with assistance from the Pharr Police Department.
Salinas will remain in custody pending transfer to a Federal Bureau of Prisons facility. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Laura Garcia.
