A Mexican national, Wblester Villanueva Echeverria, has been found guilty of conspiring to smuggle meth and cocaine into the United States through Laredo, Texas. The 30-year-old, who resided in Atlanta, Georgia, was part of a massive drug trafficking operation that imported approximately 10,460 kilograms of meth, valued at $157 million, from June 2019 to August 2023. The operation used creative methods to conceal the drugs, including hiding them in produce, charcoal, and frozen strawberry puree. Echeverria’s conviction is the result of a five-day trial that ended on July 27.
The investigation began in November 2021 when law enforcement seized 1,184 kilograms of meth and 51.4 kilograms of cocaine concealed in a cauliflower shipment that entered through the World Trade Bridge Port of Entry in Laredo. Further investigation revealed numerous other shipments tied to Echeverria and his co-conspirators, including nearly 800 kilograms of meth hidden within a shipment of strawberry puree and over 460 kilograms of meth within a load of charcoal.
Echeverria used various tactics to evade detection, including creating a Facebook account under a fake name and using multiple cell phone numbers. He also instructed his co-conspirators to delete messages and communications to avoid leaving a digital trail. The jury heard about the vast conspiracy linking Mexican drug importers, a Dallas cell, and Echeverria’s Georgia-based co-conspirators.
The conviction is a significant blow to the drug trafficking operation, and Echeverria’s sentencing will be determined at a later date. The case was investigated by the Homeland Security Task Force, with assistance from other law enforcement agencies.
