⏱ 2 min read

Al Stevenson McGhee, a 47-year-old Indianapolis man, pleaded guilty to possessing firearms as a felon after a harrowing SWAT standoff on November 6, 2024. McGhee had pointed a silver revolver at his girlfriend when she returned home from work, threatening to shoot her if she left her bedroom. The victim escaped through a window and contacted police, leading to a lengthy standoff with Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers. McGhee fired multiple rounds at officers, including at a police drone, before being taken into custody in the early morning hours of November 7, 2024.

McGhee’s criminal history is marked by convictions for cruelty to an animal, invasion of privacy, and felony criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon. The latest incident ended with McGhee being sentenced to two years and seven months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release. His federal sentence will run consecutively to any sentence imposed in his pending Marion County case, which includes charges of criminal confinement with a deadly weapon and intimidation.

The search of McGhee’s residence revealed the extent of the danger posed to officers during the standoff, with four rounds fired above the doorway where officers had been standing and a bullet hole within two feet of their position. Fortunately, no officers were harmed during the standoff.

McGhee’s sentencing serves as a reminder of the gravity of his crimes and the importance of keeping firearms out of the hands of felons. The case was handled by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and federal authorities, who worked together to bring McGhee to justice.
