A devastating fentanyl overdose in Tampa, Florida, has led to a 27-year prison sentence for Ludwin Borgen, 49, of Apollo Beach. On March 29, 2022, Borgen sold fentanyl to a woman who later died from the overdose. The woman, who had arranged to buy the drug from Borgen the night before, was found unresponsive in a bathtub with a syringe nearby.
The investigation, led by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office and assisted by the FBI, revealed that Borgen was a known drug dealer in the Tampa Bay area. After the woman’s death, detectives used her phone to set up a sting operation, arranging to buy more fentanyl from Borgen. When Borgen arrived for the meeting, he was arrested and his vehicle was searched, yielding more fentanyl, baggies, syringes, and a scale.
The toxicology report showed that the victim had approximately ten times the therapeutic concentration of fentanyl in her system, consistent with overdose deaths. This case highlights the dangers of fentanyl distribution and the devastating consequences it can have on individuals and communities.
Borgen’s sentence is a significant outcome in the ongoing effort to combat the opioid epidemic in Florida.
