Florida Man Guilty of Transporting Child Pornography
A 51-year-old Parkland man has been found guilty of transporting child pornography, a crime that has sparked outrage and concern across the nation. Anthony Mangione, a resident of Parkland, Florida, pleaded guilty to one count of transporting child pornography, announced Assistant Attorney General Lanny A. Breuer of the Criminal Division, Acting Special Agent in Charge Jeffrey C. Mazanec of the FBI’s Miami Field Office and Sheriff Al Lamberti of the Broward County, Fla., Sheriff’s Office.
Mangione was taken into custody pending sentencing, which has been scheduled for October 5, 2012, in U.S. District Court in West Palm Beach, Fla. According to court documents, between March 2010 and September 2010, Mangione transported visual depictions of minors engaging in sexually explicit conduct.
As part of his plea, Mangione faces a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison and a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. He will also be required to register as a sex offender in any jurisdiction in which he lives, works or attends school. The harsh penalties are a result of the severity of the crime, which has left many in the community shaken.
The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
This case is being investigated by the Broward County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI’s Miami Field Office. Assistant Deputy Chief Alexandra R. Gelber and Trial Attorney Michael Grant of the Criminal Division’s CEOS are prosecuting the case. The investigation into Mangione’s activities began after a tip was received from an anonymous source, highlighting the importance of community vigilance in preventing child sex crimes.
The guilty plea is a significant step forward in the fight against child sex crimes, and serves as a reminder that those who commit such heinous acts will be held accountable. As the nation continues to grapple with the issue of child sex crimes, it is essential that we remain vigilant and work together to protect our children from exploitation and abuse.
The case against Mangione is a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of child sex crimes. We urge anyone with information about similar crimes to come forward and report their suspicions to the authorities. Together, we can make a difference and create a safer, more just society for all.
