Waterloo Man Pleads Guilty to Possession of Child Pornography

A 69-year-old man from Waterloo, Iowa, has pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography, a federal crime that carries severe penalties, including a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years and a maximum sentence of 40 years, accompanied by a $500,000 fine and supervised release for 5 years to life.

Forrest Rindels, a resident of Waterloo, was convicted of two counts of possession of child pornography. He admitted to knowingly possessing child pornography on a tablet and a micro SD card between 2021 and 2022.

Rindels has a prior conviction for receipt of child pornography in the Northern District of Iowa in 2016. He is currently being held in the custody of the United States Marshal pending sentencing.

The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the federal government to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.

Assistant United States Attorney Mark Tremmel is prosecuting the case, which was investigated by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the Waterloo Police Department.

Rindels faces a significant prison sentence, with a minimum of 10 years and a maximum of 40 years. He is also facing a $500,000 fine and supervised release for 5 years to life. The sentencing hearing will be set after a presentence report is prepared.
