Fort Wayne’s Alan Heaton, a 35-year-old repeat offender, faced the judge’s wrath as he was sentenced to 63 months in federal prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm. The United States District Court Chief Judge Holly Brady handed down the sentence after Heaton pleaded guilty to his crime.
The former Allen County, Wells County, and DeKalb County resident has a lengthy rap sheet that included multiple felony convictions. According to court documents, Heaton’s illegal gun possession was a flagrant disregard for the law following his earlier transgressions.
Acting United States Attorney M. Scott Proctor announced the sentence, noting that Heaton will also serve 3 years of supervised release upon his prison term. The ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives) led the investigation into this case, and Assistant United States Attorney Stacey R. Speith prosecuted it.
The sentence comes as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence across all levels of law enforcement. The initiative focuses on fostering trust in communities, supporting local organizations to prevent violence, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring results to ensure safer neighborhoods for everyone.
Launched on May 26, 2021, the Department’s violent crime reduction strategy has bolstered PSN with core principles that emphasize community engagement. These include building trust and legitimacy among communities, supporting community-based organizations, setting focused and strategic law enforcement priorities, and measuring outcomes to enhance public safety.
For Heaton, the sentence is a stark reminder of the consequences of illegal firearm possession for felons, particularly in a state like Indiana where law enforcement is committed to curbing gun violence and ensuring justice is served.
