PITTSBURGH – The grim tale of Juan Garcia-Cabrera, a 37-year-old alien from Mexico, takes a darker turn as he faces federal charges for illegal re-entry after deportation. The United States Attorney Scott W. Brady revealed that Garcia-Cabrera has been indicted by a Pittsburgh federal grand jury on this severe charge.
The indictment, returned on February 6th, formally accuses Garcia-Cabrera of violating the law, having been removed from the United States by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in July 2007. Yet, he was discovered lurking in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on January 11, 2018.
Should Garcia-Cabrera be found guilty, he faces a maximum penalty of two years in federal prison, a hefty fine of $250,000, or both, as stipulated by the law. Assistant United States Attorney James R. Wilson is handling the prosecution for the government.
The investigation leading to Garcia-Cabrera’s indictment was carried out by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Pittsburgh sub-office. This case serves as a stark reminder of the stringent measures in place against those who seek to circumvent the legal channels of entry into the United States.
An indictment is merely an accusation, and Garcia-Cabrera is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
