Juston McDowell, a 25-year-old from Laurinburg, North Carolina, was sentenced to 27 months in prison for unlawfully dealing in firearms without a license in Albany, New York. Between March 2022 and February 2025, McDowell acquired multiple firearms, including handguns and switches, in North Carolina and sold them in Albany and elsewhere. He did not have a license to deal in firearms, putting numerous guns in the hands of individuals who sought to circumvent laws designed to keep communities safe.
McDowell’s actions were deemed dangerous, causing additional unregulated firearms to enter neighborhoods. The sentence sends a message that illegally bringing guns into the district will result in punishment. The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) and prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York.
The ATF and the U.S. Attorney’s Office worked together to disrupt the illegal flow of firearms that drive violence. The case underscores the critical role of partnership in this mission. United States District Judge Anne M. Nardacci also imposed a 3-year term of post-release supervision.
The sentence is a result of the hard work and determination of the ATF and the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The agencies are committed to keeping communities safe by putting an end to the illegal trafficking of firearms.
