Hampton Man Sentenced for Role in Drug Deal Shootout
A Hampton man was sentenced to 66 months in prison for his role in a drug deal shootout that left multiple people injured. Randell Lamont Woods, 24, of Hampton, Virginia, was found guilty of conspiracy to distribute cocaine.
The shootout occurred on December 27, 2011, in the parking lot of the Hampton Walmart. According to court documents, Woods planned the drug delivery and was armed with a stolen .45 caliber firearm. He provided cover for David Andrews during the shootout, which resulted in 25 shots being exchanged between Woods, Andrews, and a third individual.
Woods and Andrews retreated to a nearby motel, where they surrendered to Hampton Police after a seven-hour standoff. The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Hampton Police Division.
Christopher Vinson, a participant in the crime, pleaded guilty on April 23, 2012, and was sentenced to 96 months in prison and three years of supervised release. David Andrews pleaded guilty on June 5, 2012, and was sentenced to 228 months in prison and five years of supervised release.
Woods pled guilty on June 11, 2012, and was sentenced to 66 months in prison and four years of supervised release. The case was prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Timothy Murphy on behalf of the United States.
United States District Judge Raymond A. Jackson presided over the sentencing. The case serves as a reminder of the dangers of drug trafficking and the consequences of getting involved in such activities.
The sentencing brings an end to a long and complex case. Neighbors of Woods expressed relief that the case was finally resolved. ‘It’s a good feeling to know that the streets are safer now,’ said one neighbor.
