Rapid City Man Sentenced to Federal Prison for Illegal Firearm Possession

Harold Dooley, a 32-year-old man from Rapid City, South Dakota, has been sentenced to four years in federal prison for Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person. The sentencing occurred on March 28, 2022, at the U.S. District Court.

Dooley was previously convicted of a felony, making him prohibited from possessing firearms. Despite this, he was found in possession of a Phoenix Arms, model HP22A, .22 caliber semi-automatic pistol in November 2019 in Rapid City.

Dooley was indicted by a federal grand jury on December 17, 2019, and pleaded guilty on October 15, 2021. The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Rapid City Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Patterson prosecuted the case.

As part of his sentence, Dooley was ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund and will serve three years of supervised release after his prison term. He was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
