A convenience store in Hartford’s south end turned into a war zone when 37-year-old Morris Carter III, aka ‘Mo,’ allegedly brawled with a patron and brandished a firearm in the early morning hours of February 19, 2023. Surveillance footage captured the chaos, showing Carter wielding a gun and beating the victim in the head with a magazine, which ejected ammunition during the altercation.
Carter then fled the scene, drove towards Wethersfield, and tossed two handguns out the window. Wethersfield Police stopped the car and found a loaded magazine under the passenger seat. A resident later called police after discovering one of the discarded guns at the end of her driveway. Officers found both firearms, a magazine, and ammunition in the area.
Carter’s violent crime spree earned him a 13-year federal prison sentence. He was found guilty of one count of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and one count of possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number on August 15, 2025. Carter’s prior conviction for conspiracy to distribute crack cocaine in 2013 and his supervised release at the time of the offense contributed to the severity of the sentence.
U.S. District Judge Kari A. Dooley handed down the sentence, which includes 136 months for the firearm violations and 20 months for violating the conditions of his supervised release. The Federal Bureau of Investigation led the investigation into Carter’s crimes.
