Hector Agustin Esparza, Illegal Firearms Possession, Texas 2022

LAREDO, TX – A brazen shootout with law enforcement landed 51-year-old Hector Agustin Esparza a decade in federal prison, U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani announced Thursday. Esparza, a Laredo resident with a rap sheet stretching back years, pleaded guilty to illegal firearms possession on September 12th and received the maximum sentence from U.S. District Judge Diana Saldana.

The incident began June 15th when officers responded to a “be-on-the-lookout” for a vehicle connected to a burglary. Esparza, behind the wheel, refused to yield, sparking a chase that snaked through Laredo streets and parking lots. The pursuit culminated in a Sam’s Club parking lot, where Esparza didn’t just stop – he fired at the responding officers before fleeing again. He blew through a red light, ultimately crashing into another vehicle.

A .40 caliber pistol was recovered from the car after Esparza was taken into custody. He readily admitted to being the shooter during the chase, and chillingly revealed he was a former member of the Mexican Mafia. The revelation deepened the gravity of the case, especially considering Esparza had only recently been released from a four-year stretch for aggravated robbery. A check of his record confirmed a staggering seven prior felony convictions, and the fact he was already facing another indictment.

Federal law prohibits convicted felons from possessing firearms, a fact Esparza clearly disregarded. Judge Saldana underscored the danger of his actions, stating that Esparza “could have killed members of law enforcement.” The ten-year sentence will be immediately followed by three years of supervised release. This case marks the first successful prosecution stemming from the newly formed Texas Anti-Gang (TAG) Center in Laredo.

The TAG Center, operational since mid-2022, is a co-located multi-agency effort designed to combat criminal organizations operating in the Laredo area. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) led the investigation, with crucial assistance from the Laredo Police Department. This collaborative model, placing agents from different agencies side-by-side, aims to enhance intelligence gathering and streamline operations.

Nine other cases, charging a total of 14 individuals with various drug and firearm offenses, are currently pending trial or sentencing in federal court as a result of the TAG program. For now, Laredo can breathe a little easier knowing one dangerous felon is off the streets – for at least a decade.
