Henderson Man Jailed 23 Years for Fentanyl Overdose Deaths
Owensboro, KY – In a devastating blow to the opioid epidemic ravaging the nation, Elijah Lovell, a 20-year-old man from Henderson, Kentucky, was sentenced to 23 years in federal prison for distributing fentanyl that resulted in two overdose deaths.
U.S. Attorney Michael A. Bennett of the Western District of Kentucky, Chief Sean L. McKinney of the Henderson Police Department, and Sheriff David Crafton of the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office made the announcement.
According to court documents, Lovell was sentenced to 23 years in prison, followed by 5 years of supervised release, for two counts of distributing fentanyl resulting in death. Between December 27, 2021, and January 31, 2022, Lovell distributed fentanyl that resulted in the death of another person, “J.H.”
Additionally, on or about May 5, 2022, Lovell distributed fentanyl that resulted in the death of another person, “C.G.”
“Let this sentence serve notice to those who traffic drugs in the Western District that this office, together with our law enforcement partners, will aggressively investigate and prosecute individuals who cause the tragic loss of life through the distribution of their poison,” said U.S. Attorney Bennett.
“I commend the Henderson Police Department and the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office for their excellent work and partnership during the investigation and prosecution of this case.”
The Henderson Police Department and Henderson County Sheriff’s Office investigated the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Frank Dahl prosecuting the case.
There is no parole in the federal system, leaving Lovell to serve out his 23-year sentence without the possibility of early release.
The opioid epidemic continues to claim thousands of lives each year, with fentanyl being a major contributor to the crisis. This sentence serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of fentanyl trafficking and the commitment of law enforcement to hold perpetrators accountable.
