Grimy Times has learned that Alberto Giovanni Zamora, a 34-year-old California man, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for possession with intent to distribute one kilogram or more of a mixture or substance containing heroin. Following his prison term, Zamora will serve five years on supervised release. This harsh sentence was handed down by United States Attorney Joe Kelly on September 14, 2018.
Zamora’s downfall began on August 25, 2017, when a Seward County Sheriff’s Sergeant stopped a car driven by Zamora’s co-defendant, Juan Jesus Nava, for following too closely along I-80. Zamora was the passenger and owner of the car, and both men gave verbal consent to search the vehicle. During the search, 15 packages of heroin were found, weighing approximately 24 ½ pounds, or about 11 kilograms.
Photos obtained by authorities showed Zamora driving the car across the border into the United States from Mexico on August 22, 2017. Zamora’s co-defendant, Juan Jesus Nava, was also involved in the heroin trafficking operation. Nava pled guilty to misprision of a felony for failing to notify Seward County deputies that Zamora was transporting heroin.
Nava was sentenced in May of 2018 to 27 months in prison. The Seward County Sheriff’s Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) were instrumental in bringing Zamora to justice.
According to authorities, Zamora’s arrest marked a significant blow to heroin trafficking operations in the region. The heroin, valued at approximately $240,000, was destined for distribution in the United States. Thanks to the tireless efforts of law enforcement, these deadly substances will no longer be flooding our streets.
Zamora’s sentence sends a clear message to those involved in heroin trafficking: our communities will not tolerate the scourge of heroin. We will continue to work tirelessly to dismantle these operations and bring those responsible to justice.
Grimy Times would like to thank the Seward County Sheriff’s Department and the DEA for their dedication to keeping our communities safe.
