Honduran Man Charged With Illegal Re-entry

Grimy Times – NEW ORLEANS, LA – A Honduran man has been charged with illegal re-entry into the United States. JOSE ANGEL ESPINOZA-FUENTES, age 42, was previously removed from the US on July 22, 2011.

According to the indictment, ESPINOZA-FUENTES was later found in the Eastern District of Louisiana on July 1, 2018, without permission from the Attorney General of the United States or the Secretary of Homeland Security to reenter.

The indictment alleges that ESPINOZA-FUENTES, a native of Honduras, is charged with violating Title 18, United States Code, Section 1326(a). U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans announced the charges.

U.S. Attorney Evans reiterated that an indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. He praised the work of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency in investigating this matter.

Assistant United States Attorney Jon Maestri is in charge of the prosecution. If convicted, ESPINOZA-FUENTES faces a maximum term of imprisonment of two years, a fine of $250,000, one year of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment fee.

The case is pending in the Eastern District of Louisiana. A trial date has not been set. The public is reminded that an indictment is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

U.S. Attorney Evans has made it clear that his office is committed to protecting the citizens of the Eastern District of Louisiana from crimes like this.

This case is a reminder of the importance of immigration laws and the consequences of violating them. The U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to work with law enforcement agencies to ensure that those who break our laws are held accountable.
